Cybersecurity for hotels: 7 measures from guest Wi-Fi to the booking system

14 October 2026 · 3 min read

Cybersecurity for hotels is no longer a concern only for large chains — it matters for every size of hospitality business. A hotel holds guest personal data, card details, a booking system and an open guest network, which makes it a high-value target for attackers. Here are the 7 most important measures to protect a hotel.

Why are hotels targeted?

Hospitality stands out for three reasons: heavy card and identity data, a 24/7 uptime requirement (if the system is down, check-in stops), and many temporary or third-party staff. Even a few hours of booking-system downtime means direct lost revenue — which makes hotels attractive for ransomware.

7 essential cybersecurity measures for hotels

1. Separate guest Wi-Fi from the corporate network

Running guest Wi-Fi on the same network as the booking and accounting systems is the most common — and most dangerous — mistake. Guest Wi-Fi should sit on its own VLAN with no access to internal systems.

2. Keep the booking (PMS) and card systems updated

PMS, channel manager and POS software must be patched promptly; systems that process card data should be isolated and access-restricted.

3. Train staff against phishing

Fake “booking cancellation” or “invoice” emails target the front desk and accounting. Be especially alert to payment-redirect fraud where attackers claim bank details have changed.

4. Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA)

MFA should be mandatory for email, the PMS and remote access — paired with conditional access, since MFA alone is not enough.

5. Handle guest data in line with data-protection law

Identity, contact and card data fall under data-protection regulation (KVKK in Türkiye): disclosure, retention periods and security all apply.

6. Back up — and test that you can restore

Backing up isn’t enough; regularly test that you can actually restore from backup. In a ransomware attack, that’s what saves the business.

7. Don’t forget cameras, locks and IoT devices

Cameras, smart locks and room automation left internet-facing with default passwords become an entry point. A separate network and password changes are essential.

Quick self-check: Is your guest Wi-Fi on the same network as your booking system? When did you last test a restore from backup? If you can’t answer these clearly, you’re at risk.
