Ransomware in manufacturing plants: what happens if the line stops, and how to protect it

14 October 2026 · 2 min read

Ransomware in manufacturing is one of the most expensive cyber threats of recent years. In a factory, an attack doesn’t just encrypt data — it stops the production line, and every minute of downtime is a measurable cost. Here’s the risk and how food and manufacturing businesses can protect themselves.

Why are manufacturing plants targeted?

Two reasons. First, the pressure of a stopped line makes factories more likely to pay. Second, operational technology (OT) networks often run old operating systems, unpatched PLC/SCADA devices and are intertwined with the office network — easy paths for an attacker. In food production, a halt in traceability or cold-chain systems can even become a food-safety issue.

How does the attacker get in?

The most common routes: an office employee clicking a phishing email, unprotected remote-maintenance connections left open, and vulnerabilities in unpatched systems. Once inside the office network, the attacker moves to the production network if the two aren’t separated.

6 steps to protect a plant

Measure What it prevents
Separating office (IT) and production (OT) networks The attack jumping from office to the line
Backup + regular restore testing Having to pay to get production back
Update / patch management Entry through known vulnerabilities
MFA + controlled remote access Login with stolen passwords
Staff phishing training The first click
Written incident-response plan Panic and prolonged downtime

The two most critical are IT/OT separation and a tested restore. When an attack hits, what saves the business isn’t “I have a backup” but “I can get production back from backup in X hours.”

One question: If your production line went down today, how quickly could you bring systems back? If you don’t know that time (your RTO), you don’t have a plan.
